The main aim of the Triennial surveys is to estimate the spawning stock biomass of mackerel and horse mackerel applying the Annual and Daily Egg Production Method (AEPM and DEPM). The method relates the number of freshly spawned eggs found in the water column to the number of female having produced these eggs. Knowing the fecundity of the females and the sex ratio provides an estimate for the spawning-stock Biomass. In the frame of the ICES WGMEGS,AZTI is in charge of sampling the area of the Bay of Biscay during period 3 (March April) and 4 (May). Sampling consist in collecting plankton samples to identify and stage the mackerel and horse mackerel eggs, and capture adults mackerel to estimate reproductive parameters (Fecundity, atresia, Batch fecundity, Spawning Fraction and sex ratio). Data of length, weight, sex maturity and otolith for age determination are recorded at each haul. Therefore, additional samples will be collecting for the following objectives: a) Plankton and Adult mackerel samples for genetic analysis. The objective of this sampling is to determinate the population structure of NEA mackerel and test the spawning homing behaviour. b) Adults mackerel samples for GCxGC-MS analysis for discrimination of spawning ground. c) Fish Eggs for fluorescent and in situ hybridization-Method (ISH). Environmental parameters: At each station profile of sea temperature and salinity are recorded.
