Ocean circulation in the Southern Ocean is characterized by a number of fronts associated with a strong current that surrounds the continent in a clockwise direction: the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Near the mainland, the Front Slope Antarctic separates the very cold water (-1.8 ° C <T <0 º C) and dense of the continental shelf from tha warmer water (0 ° C <T <5 º C) of open water, and leads to a counter that surrounds the continent counterclockwise.
